Board of Governors of the Nevada Bar has worked diligently to address issues affecting the practice of law. We hear, for example, that the lack of civility amongst attorneys continues to negatively impact their wellbeing. The board’s Civility Taskforce, in January of this year, presented to the Board a Creed of Professionalism and Civility.
The 20 points in the creed define specific standards that aim to resolve disputes rationally and peacefully. Incivility can delay justice and even deny it. These standards honor and respect the spirit of the Rules of Professional Conduct. They balance a lawyer’s duty to protect and defend a client’s legitimate interests within the limits of the law while maintaining a civil, professional and courteous attitude towards all people in the legal system.
All Nevada attorneys are asked to read the creed and to commit to the spirit as well as the letter. Judges should reinforce these standards on the courtroom floor to reinforce our commitment to maintaining and fostering these standards. You can access the creed by clicking the link above. If you want to keep the standards as a reference, please copy them.
