JACKSONVILLE (FL)–Florida attorney Jonathan A. The International Conference on European Company Law and Corporate Governance was addressed by Jon McGowan, of The McGowan Law Firm. The conference was held at the University of Zagreb on November 24 and 25, with the theme Corporate Purpose In the Digital Era: Aiming to Revisit the Director’s Duties And Liabilities.
McGowan was invited by the Corporate Directors to speak on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) investing. ESG is rapidly developing and is moving faster than existing regulatory systems. The European Parliament recently passed legislation that could create a conflict. McGowan’s presentation emphasized the difficulties this creates for corporate directors, who must meet unclear ESG standards and fulfill their fiduciary duties. McGowan addressed conflicts between E.U. laws and European Union developments, but he primarily focused on the European Union’s level developments. the United States law and the potential problems that they might cause transnational corporations.
McGowan is a recognized expert in ESG legal development. McGowan authored a chapter about ESG in the United Kingdom, which was published by ABA Publishing. He wrote a journal article about green bonds in the United Kingdom, for The Year In Review. It was published by The International Law Journal of American Bar Association/ International Law Section. He is currently a publication with INTEREULAWEAST – Journal for International and European Law Economics and Market Integrations and The University of Chicago Business Law Review. He is a Fellow of the European Law Institute and a member of the consultative committee for Guidance on Company Capital, Financial Accounting for Corporate Sustainability.
