AALM When were you first inspired to become an attorney by the law?

YS You could see my room across Vanderbilt campus in 1992 because it had the only Clinton Gore ’92 sign visible. I was one of only a few Democrats in my class and among my closest friends, which encouraged me to pursue a profession that would allow me to promote my values. To the dismay of my doctors and nurses family, I knew that I wanted to be a lawyer and learn how to use my voice in order to make positive changes.

AALM What is it that you enjoy most about being an attorney, and why?

YS My soul is fed by the pro-bono work that I do to protect Texans voting rights and help them immigrate legally to the United States. I am the daughter two immigrants and I can see so many of my parents’ characteristics in those I have helped become legal residents. I’m grateful to my parents for making sacrifices to give me the chance to live the American Dream and I’m also proud of the work I do to help other families provide the same opportunity to their children. My parents taught me to vote in every election. I now volunteer my time to provide legal assistance during elections in order to ensure that every eligible voter has access to a voting ballot. In and out of the courtroom, my work continues to reinforce my commitment to creating a Texas in which everyone is guaranteed equal treatment. This is why I’m running for office.

AALM What has been your legal experience prepared you for an upcoming career in the legislature.

YS As a lawyer, I have a better understanding of the laws and how they can be amended or repealed. My experience as a lawyer has helped me to convince people to work together under a common goal to accomplish the tasks that Texans rely on their legislators for. The ability to resolve conflicts and a fierce commitment to your own values are not mutually incompatible. Conflict resolution begins with understanding the viewpoint of those who may be at odds with you.

AALM : What are your community involvements? Do you have a favorite organization?

YS As the proud mother of three children and a public school student, I am aware that a quality education is crucial to preparing our children for their future. Texas public schools are chronically underfunded by our current Austin legislators. I support the work that Mad For Plaid is doing in my community by raising funds to increase teacher salaries and public school funding.

I am passionate about finding loving, permanent homes for abandoned or abused animals. We’ve been adopting rescue dogs for years (we suspect they are a mix of political views) and continue to support the groups from which we adopted them.

AALM Anything else you’d like to add?

YS I’m running for the Texas Legislature to restore business-minded leadership that is problem-solving and ethics-driven in Austin. I am honored to have received the endorsement of Dallas County judge Clay Jenkins, and continue to feel humbled by all the support from our community. Please contact us if you’d like to be part of our team and support this race.
