The Stanford Center for Racial Justice is pleased to announce Dr. Jordan Starck as a IDEAL Fellow. He will advise SCRJ on intersections of racism, justice, bias, psychology, and justice. In collaboration with SCRJ, he will also teach a winter quarter practicum class. Students will learn about race, bias and the law, and will have the opportunity to support his ongoing research as well as the various projects and initiatives at Center.
Starck received a BS degree in psychology from Davidson College and a professional educator’s license. He worked as a youth program coordinator and teacher in high schools for four years. He received his PhD in Social Psychology and Social Policy from Princeton University in 2021.
Starck was a member Stanford’s inaugural cohort of IDEAL Fellows since the fall 2021. This is a group of young scholars interested in studying race and ethnicity. His research focuses on organizational diversity commitments and racial bias. His teaching and research combine to help Dr. Starck address individual prejudices, organizational diversity commitments, teaching about systemic racism and media use to improve racial attitudes. This work is described as “researching how systems of racialized oppression dynamically replicate themselves amidst norms which have tended to become more egalitarian over the years” and “and then I try understand what we can to do about it.”
Dr. Starck stated, “I’m proud to have witnessed people working to improve the status-quo and using my work to help them do it.” I’m proud of my students feeling inspired and prepared to take on these difficult issues.
SCRJ is thrilled to welcome Dr. Starck into our community.
