Dentons Appoints Kate Barton as Global CEO, Succeeding Elliott Portnoy.
The world’s largest law firm, Dentons, has appointed Kate Barton as its new Global Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Elliott Portnoy, who retired after completing his term.
The appointment was announced by the firm’s Global Board of Directors and Global Advisory Committee in July. Mrs. Barton officially began her role in early September, following an impressive 35-year career at EY (Ernst & Young), where she held several key executive leadership positions, most notably as Global Vice Chair. At EY, Barton was a driving force behind the firm’s expansion of its global tax practice, overseeing strategic investments in personnel, technology, shared services, and mergers and acquisitions.
Mrs. Barton’s appointment follows an extensive handover process with Portnoy, marking the beginning of a new era for Dentons. Kate Barton expressed her enthusiasm for leading Dentons, noting the firm’s unique approach to the legal industry. “Dentons is a firm that does things differently. It offers unparalleled global reach, exceptional legal talent and is a compelling challenger brand. I am excited about the opportunity to work with my colleagues across more than 80 countries around the world to enhance our people proposition and client-centric strategy. Over the past two months I have had the privilege and benefit of learning from Elliott’s knowledge and guidance. It is thanks to his contributions that we have the foundation to go from strength to greater strength.”
Gerald Singham, Chair of Dentons’ Global Board Talent & Governance Committee, led the search for Barton’s successor and praised her leadership qualities. He described her as thoughtful, team-oriented, and capable of working across cultures and geographies to meet client needs. “In Kate we have found a leader who is thoughtful, team-oriented and has an ability to work with people across geographies and cultures to enhance how we meet client needs. She and Elliott have collaborated closely on a meaningful and extensive handover period. Our whole firm is energized by both Elliott’s outstanding legacy and the new perspectives and depth of experience Kate will now bring to lead Dentons into the next chapter.”
Barton’s appointment comes at a critical time for Dentons, as the firm looks to build on its strong foundation and continue its growth across global markets. With her extensive experience in global strategy and organizational leadership, Barton is well-positioned to lead Dentons into the next phase of its expansion, strengthening its position as a leading global law firm.
