Paralysis can be a life-threatening injury that can cause paralysis. Paralysis occurs when a person loses the capacity to move their entire body. There are many causes of this condition, but these are the most common.
Stroke
A stroke is the main cause of paralysis (33.7%). When blood flow to the brain becomes blocked, it is called a stroke. Brain cells die when they don’t get the nutrients and oxygen they need. Brain cells that die experience a loss in function. A stroke can result in individuals being unable to perform tasks that were previously controlled by the brain cells that died. Paralysis can result from a stroke that damages the brain’s ability to send messages to trigger muscle movement.
Spinal Cord Injuries
The spinal cord, which is made up of a circular bundle of nerve fibers, tissue and nerve fibers, connects almost all parts of the body to the outside world. Spinal cord injuries can be caused by damage to the spinal cord or the surrounding vertebrae, ligaments or discs. A complete injury to the spinal cord can cause paralysis. This is when a person loses all sense and control of movement below the injury site. Paralysis is more severe the more severe the damage to the vertebrae. Paralysis is second most common cause (27.3%) due to spinal cord injuries.
These are the most common causes for spinal cord injuries:
- Motor Vehicle Collisions: Spinal Cord Injuries are caused by accidents involving motor vehicles. This includes cars, trucks, motorcycles and pedestrians. They are responsible for almost half of all spinal injuries.
- Falls More than 15% of spinal injuries are caused by Falls. This includes falls at work (e.g., construction sites or slippery sidewalks) and other factors such as unsafe properties, slips, and falls. Individuals over 65 are more likely to sustain a spinal injury due to a slip or fall.
- Violence: 12 percent of spinal injuries are caused by gunshots, knife wounds and other acts with violence, either barehanded or with weapons.
- Sports Injuries – Impact sports are responsible for around 10% of all spinal cord injuries. For example, rugby, hockey, MMA and football increase the chance of serious spinal injuries.
- Alcohol and Diseases Alcohol is a factor in about 25% of all spinal injuries. Other causes of harm include cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis and spinal cord inflammation.

Multiple Sclerosis
18.6% of paralysis cases are caused by advanced multiple sclerosis (MS). Myelin, which is a substance that surrounds nerve fibers in your spinal cord, is affected by MS. Paralysis can occur when myelin becomes damaged. The severity of MS and the location of the nerve fibers damaged will determine if a person suffering from MS is paralyzed.
Different types of paralysis
There are many types of paralysis.
- Monoplegia – Paralysis of one limb
- Hemiplegia – Paralysis of one side
- Diplegia – Paralysis that affects two limbs of the same side
- Paraplegia – Paralysis that affects both legs or lower body
- Quadriplegia or Tetraplegia: Paralysis that affects both arms and legs, or the entire body, in certain cases.
