Angela Aguilar, a doctoral student in Ethnic Studies, is also a concurrently enrolled Master of Public Health candidate at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health. She is also a full-spectrum doula/birth partner and a mother. Her research examines what constitutes medicine and medical knowledge, as well as who can practice medicine in the United States given the history of heteropatriarchy and institutional racism. Teachings and practices regarding bodies, environment, spirit and culture that are derived from U.S. indigenous, third-world, and women of colour feminist thought are seen as upstream interventions for poor health outcomes in communities with low resources. Angela was a Ford Foundation Pre-Doctoral Fellowship recipient. She is also a current School of Public Health Fellowship recipient. Angela is also a Graduate Student in Residence at the Institute for the Study of Societal Issues as well as the Berkeley Center for Social Medicine. For the 2015-2016 academic years, she is the co-facilitator for the Center on Reproductive Rights and Justice Working Group.
