NAPERVILLE (IL)–Collins Law lawyers Shawn Collins, Margaret (Maggie) Galka, and Margaret (Maggie) Galka received awards at the Trial Lawyers Excellence Awards in Chicago, which were held by Jury Verdict Reporter. Shawn and Maggie were awarded the 2023 Trial Lawyer Excellence Award in recognition of obtaining “the highest reported Illinois verdict or settlement for an individual plaintiff.”
Shawn and Maggie received recognition for their contributions to the Sterigenics Trial Team that won a record-breaking $363 million verdict in September 2022 for Plaintiff Sue Kamuda. Kamuda was diagnosed with cancer after years of breathing carcinogens, such as ethylene oxide from a Sterigenics Sterilization Plant located nearby. The verdict was the highest single plaintiff verdict ever recorded in Illinois. It included $38 in compensatory damages, and $325 in punitive damage. Shawn said: “The large punitive damages award sends a clear message to polluters everywhere that putting profits before the health of their neighbors will have serious consequences.”
