David Margol, the newest Spohrer & Dodd member, was interviewed for our latest Rising Star. He also holds an MBA from University of San Diego.

AALM When were you first inspired to become an attorney by the law?

DM Most people decide to become lawyers before or during college. They then go to law school immediately after earning their undergraduate degree. After working in a corporate environment, I decided to pursue a career as an attorney. After having a father that is an attorney, it was a great opportunity to see what law practice is like. When I compared this to my corporate job, the decision became clear.

Tell about your mentors. What are the most important lessons that they have taught you?

DM I was fortunate to have great mentors all throughout my legal career. My father Rodney and Rufus Pennington were two of the most experienced trial lawyers in the state and possibly the entire country when I started my legal career. It’s a blessing to be able to learn from a new group of mentors. I consider Bob Spohrer and Steve Browning, as well as the other attorneys at Spohrer & Dodd, to be my mentors. In the brief time I have been at the firm, I have already learned from each of them. The most important lesson I have learned is to always be prepared. It is impossible to substitute diligent preparation.

AALM Why did you choose Spohrer & Dodd as your employer? What would you say about the culture at Spohrer & Dodd?

DM I was convinced by the firm’s culture that Spohrer & Dodd would be the best fit for my next legal career. The firm pays great attention to details when it comes to handling cases. The firm also values work-life balance. It’s important to me as a father and husband of two small children that I have that balance. I am lucky that my firm recognizes this.

What is the most memorable case you have worked on?

DM Around 10 years ago I worked on a lawsuit that involved Arianna Huffington and the Huffington Post as defendants. The defendants were defended by one of the most prestigious and largest law firms in the entire world. During that trial, I learned the importance of being more prepared than your adversary. Our team prepared with a relentless approach, given the opponent. You will be successful if you repeat this every time.

AALM How do you envision the legal profession changing over your career, with technology and a globalized world?

DM I think using technology to help juries understand complex issues will evolve and I view that as a good thing.

AALM What is your favorite activity outside of work?

DM My wife is wonderful and I have two beautiful children. When I am not at work, I spend time with my family doing fun outdoor activities.
