Falsifying business records is generally treated as a minor misdemeanour. However, Trump is charged with felony offences. This is a much more serious crime and could lead to a one-year sentence.
These charges are related to Trump’s involvement with hush-money payments through Michael Cohen, a former Trump lawyer, to Stormy Daniels, a former porn star Stormy. This was before the 2016 presidential election. These hush money payments were disguised as legal services payments.
Alvin Bragg, Manhattan District Attorney, has been investigating the payments for five years. Bragg asked reporters: Why did Donald Trump make false statements repeatedly? Bragg said. “The evidence will prove that he did this to cover up crimes related to the 2016 election.”
Trump returned to Florida within hours of his court appearance. He stated in a statement that the fake case was only brought to interfere with the 2024 election. It should be dismissed immediately.
