Artem Chigvintsev, 42 and Nikki Garcia, 40 have been granted restraining orders against each other after an alleged domestic violence on August 29th where Artem Chigvintsev was arrested with charges, that were eventually dropped on September 24th due to a lack of evidence.
Total Bellas, Nikki Garcia filed her request on Monday, September 30 and a judge signed it off. Dancing with the Stars professional Artem Chigvintsev filed his request on Thursday, October 3 and it was approved the next day.
Nikki Garcia alleged that Artem Chigvintsev has became “increasingly angry” after getting cut from Dancing With the Stars. During an argument on the morning of the alleged incident Chigvintsev tackled her to the ground in front of their 4-year-old son, Matteo, and restrained her in a manner that caused her to feel like she was suffocating. However, Chigvintsev claimed that Nikki Garcia had “completely lost it” and moved from verbal abuse to physical abuse and started screaming and forcefully throwing both of Matteo’s sneakers” at him. The couple’s argument on that morning began when Garcia criticized Chigvintsev for not having their son’s breakfast and packed lunch ready. Chigvintsev claims that Garcia was “stressed due to her job that was coming up, co-hosting role on Netflix’s Unfinished Beef special.
Nikki Garcia had admitted throwing the shoes at him after growing “overwhelmed” by Artem yelling at her, but insisted they “weigh hardly anything and could not have hurt him.” Artem Chigvintsev said that “There was a mutual struggle, and both ended up on the ground, at that moment I knew that nothing I would say would get to her and make her calm down. I cannot stress enough how many times I pleaded with her to stop and calm down. I was hurt and scared of her continuing on. I needed help for her to stop.”
Artem Chigvintsev called 911, though he was the one arrested on charges of corporal injury to a spouse that day. Chigvintsev ‘s lawyer Illona Antonyan said in statement: “Mr. Chigvintsev contacted law enforcement on August 29th, seeking protection from his wife’s persistent aggression. While he was on the phone with the police, Ms. Garcia-Colace made a pointed statement, saying, ‘Do you understand where this is going now, Artem? You just ruined my career, and you know it.’ That day, someone was going to be arrested, and it wouldn’t have been Mr. Chigvintsev if Ms. Garcia-Colace had told the truth. He denies ever tackling her. He was shocked to learn two weeks after the incident that she made this allegation against him; at that point it made sense to him why he was arrested. As a result of wife’s self-serving statement, Mr. Chigvintsev’s career suffered, with numerous opportunities being cancelled due to these false allegations. He was not the primary aggressor.”
Nikki Garcia has filed for divorce on September 11th after two years of marriage.
