Jury Finds Conor McGregor Guilty of Hotel Rape in Civil Case, Awards Victim Damages.
A jury in a civil court has determined that Conor McGregor raped a woman in a hotel, resulting in her being awarded €248,603 (£206,000) in damages.
Nikita Hand expressed that “justice has been served” after winning her civil case against the well-known Irish mixed martial arts fighter. The jury at Dublin’s High Court concluded that McGregor assaulted her in a hotel back in 2018. Following the verdict on Friday evening, McGregor, 36, left the court without making any comments. He later stated that he plans to appeal the civil court’s ruling, expressing disappointment that the jury did not have access to all the evidence reviewed by the director of public prosecutions. He concluded his statement by emphasizing his focus on his family and future.
In court, McGregor had claimed that his encounter with Ms. Hand in a penthouse at the Beacon Hotel in December 2018 was consensual. After the verdict, a visibly emotional Ms. Hand described the weeks leading up to the case as a “nightmare,” affecting not just her but also her daughter, friends, and loved ones. “I’m overwhelmed and deeply touched by the support I’ve received from everyone,” said the mother. “This is something I will never forget.”

With the verdict behind her, she expressed hope for moving forward with her family and friends. She also reached out to other victims of sexual assault, encouraging them to speak out: “I hope my story serves as a reminder that no matter how scared you may feel, you have a voice. Keep fighting for justice. You can stand up for yourself, regardless of who the perpetrator is, and justice will prevail.”
Ms. Hand testified in court that McGregor forcibly restrained her on a bed, choked her multiple times, and “brutally raped and battered” her. The jury in the civil court learned that she suffered significant injuries, including deep bruises on her hands and wrists, a bloody scratch on her breast, and soreness in her neck. However, McGregor’s legal team challenged the lawsuit, alleging that she was attempting “extortion.”
They referenced CCTV footage showing Ms. Hand arriving at and departing from the hotel with McGregor and another man, James Lawrence, whom she also accused of sexual assault. Both McGregor and Lawrence denied any wrongdoing. While Ms. Hand was successful in her case against McGregor, her claim against Lawrence was unsuccessful. On Monday, McGregor’s attorneys urged jurors to focus on the evidence rather than their personal feelings about the well-known fighter. The civil trial revealed that McGregor and Ms. Hand were acquainted and had interacted on social media from time to time.
Prior to the incident, Ms. Hand had reached out to McGregor, who then picked her and a friend up in his vehicle. The court heard that McGregor made advances towards her, but she declined to engage in sexual intercourse as she was on her period.

Who is Conor McGregor?
Conor McGregor is a name that evokes both admiration and controversy in the world of mixed martial arts (MMA). Known as “The Notorious,” McGregor’s journey from a modest upbringing in Dublin, Ireland, to becoming one of the most talked-about figures in sports is marked by significant achievements as well as turbulent incidents, both inside and outside the cage. A polarizing figure, he has been hailed for his talent and criticized for his behavior, making his story as complex as it is compelling.
Born on July 14, 1988, in Crumlin, Dublin, Conor Anthony McGregor grew up in a working-class neighborhood. A fan of soccer in his youth, he later turned to boxing at the age of 11 as a way to channel his energy. McGregor trained at the Crumlin Boxing Club, where he won a Dublin Novice Championship before leaving the sport in his teens.
McGregor’s life took a new direction when he discovered mixed martial arts. Training under coach John Kavanagh, he pursued the sport while working as an apprentice plumber. His decision to abandon a stable career to focus on fighting was met with skepticism from his family, but McGregor’s determination ultimately set him on a path to the global stage.
The Rise of “The Notorious”
McGregor began his professional MMA career in 2008 with Cage Warriors, a UK-based promotion. Despite initial losses, he built an impressive record, claiming both the featherweight and lightweight titles in 2012. His success in Cage Warriors attracted the attention of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the world’s largest MMA promotion.
Signing with the UFC in 2013, McGregor quickly gained attention with a knockout win in his debut. By 2015, he unified the featherweight championship, defeating Jose Aldo in just 13 seconds—the fastest title fight in UFC history. In 2016, he became the first fighter in UFC history to hold two titles simultaneously, adding the lightweight belt with a dominant win over Eddie Alvarez.
While McGregor’s fighting achievements earned him fame, his career has been overshadowed by controversies. His 2016 loss to Nate Diaz at welterweight marked a humbling moment, though he won the rematch later that year. After a hiatus from MMA, McGregor returned in 2018 to face Khabib Nurmagomedov, losing in a fourth-round submission. The fight was marred by a post-match brawl between the two camps, resulting in suspensions and fines.
Off the mat, McGregor has faced legal troubles, including multiple arrests for incidents ranging from property damage to alleged assault. In 2018, he attacked a bus carrying UFC fighters, injuring passengers and drawing widespread criticism. Additional allegations, including a sexual assault investigation in Ireland, have further tarnished his reputation.
Boxing and Business Ventures
In 2017, McGregor ventured into professional boxing, facing undefeated champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a highly publicized bout. Though he lost via TKO in the 10th round, the event was a massive financial success, further boosting McGregor’s global profile. Outside the ring, McGregor has capitalized on his fame through endorsements and business ventures, including his Proper No. Twelve whiskey brand. However, critics argue that his focus on commercial success has come at the expense of his fighting career.
McGregor’s career has been a mix of triumph and controversy. While he holds a record of landmark achievements in the UFC, his behavior outside the cage has often overshadowed his talent. Whether remembered for his fighting skills or his controversies, McGregor remains one of the most polarizing figures in sports today.
