Two women, Caitlyn Jenning and Rachel Dolezal were the focus of media attention this summer. This sparked heated public discussion about identity and transformation. This panel will discuss the social construction of race, gender and sexuality and how they can be changed. It will also debate whether all self-identifications should be accepted. Is race, gender, or sexual orientation similar? We might reject certain claims of racial identity, but affirm all assertions about gender identification. People of color should welcome whites who identify themselves as a racial minority, as long as they are not fighting for racial injustice. How has Caitlyn Jenner’s media attention impacted marginalized transwomen of all races, poor or not?
