An 18-year-old British national has received a one-year prison sentence in Dubai following a “holiday romance” with a 17-year-old girl at the time of their relationship. Marcus Fakana encountered the girl, who is also from London and is now 18, while vacationing with his family in the United Arab Emirates.
The leader of the advocacy group Detained in Dubai described the situation as a “disgrace,” noting that Mr. Fakana feels abandoned by the British government since his arrest in September. He is anticipated to file an appeal against the ruling. Mr. Fakana previously indicated that the couple kept their relationship hidden from the girl’s family due to their strict nature and had intended to continue their romance upon returning to the UK.
However, he reported that police arrived at his family’s hotel and took him into custody without any explanation. According to Detained in Dubai, Mr. Fakana was arrested and charged after the girl’s mother discovered their messages and photographs upon their return to the UK and subsequently contacted Dubai police. “[Marcus] was fervently hoping to return home this week, but prosecutorial errors during the initial stages of the case resulted in it not being classified as a misdemeanour when it should have been,” stated Rahda Stirling, the group’s leader.

Mr. Fakana and his family have called upon Foreign Secretary David Lammy, their local MP in Tottenham, to take action in this matter. The Foreign Office has confirmed that it is in communication with them. Dubai is recognized for its stringent regulations regarding drugs, alcohol, and sexual conduct, with the age of consent set at 18 and rigorously enforced.
In a prior statement, prosecutors remarked: “Under UAE law, the girl is legally regarded as a minor, and in accordance with internationally recognized procedures, her mother, as the legal guardian, lodged the complaint. “Dubai’s legal framework is dedicated to safeguarding the rights of all individuals and ensuring fair judicial processes.”
