Salem-Keizer Schools Settle $400K Lawsuit Over Joshua Rist Abuse Allegations.

Salem-Keizer Public Schools has agreed to a $400,000 settlement in a lawsuit involving Joshua Rist, a former choir teacher at McNary High School. Rist was accused of grooming and sexually abusing two students between 2015 and 2020. The lawsuit, filed in September 2023, sought $10 million in damages and also named the school district for allegedly failing to protect the students from Rist’s actions.

The settlement, finalized on November 5, 2023, and filed with the court on November 25, stipulates that each plaintiff will receive $200,000. The identities of the plaintiffs remain confidential. The school district has not disclosed the source of the funds used for the settlement.

At the time the lawsuit was filed, Joshua Rist was employed at Kalapuya Elementary School. He was placed on paid administrative leave on October 2, 2023, following additional complaints from another McNary student. The investigation into this second complaint is still ongoing, and Rist remains on leave.

Emily C. Stebbins, the plaintiffs’ attorney, praised her clients for their courage in coming forward. She stated that their actions led to Rist’s removal from the classroom and contributed to a legislative change aimed at protecting students from sexual advances by teachers. “We hope these overdue but positive outcomes can protect children in the future from going through what our clients endured.” Stebbins said.

The settlement brings some closure to a painful chapter for the victims and the broader community. The case underscores the critical need for vigilance in safeguarding students from abuse within educational settings.

While Salem-Keizer Public Schools has not yet provided further details on the settlement funds or the ongoing investigation, the case has generated significant public interest. It highlights the importance of accountability and transparency in the education system.
