Indictment accuses Trump of conspiracy to defraud US, conspiracy to obstruct a official proceeding, obstruction against citizens’ rights, and conspiracy to defraud US. The charges are the result of Jack Smith’s investigation into Trump’s actions after his election loss. This culminated in his supporters’ attempt to storm the US Capitol building on 6 January 2021.
The indictment’s first page states that “The Defendant has lost the 2020 Presidential Election” . The indictment states that “despite having lost, the defendant was determined to stay in power.” For more than two month following the 3 November 2020 election, the defendant spread lies that he actually won .”
This is the third time that criminal charges against the former President have been filed in the last four months. The indictment lists six co-conspirators. One of them is believed to have been former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani who served as Trump’s lawyer after his election loss.
Trump’s campaign team for re-election immediately denounced this indictment. In a Truth Social post, the campaign stated that the lawlessness of the persecutions of Trump and his supporters was reminiscent of Nazi Germany during the 1930s and the former Soviet Union.
