Attorney at Law Magazine interviewed Chicago criminal defense attorney, Vadim A. Glozman. He is the founder of The Law Offices of Vadim A. Glozman. They discussed his career and outlook on the field.

AALM : Tell us about your journey to becoming a criminal defense attorney.

VGDuring an internship with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office I witnessed people facing one of, if they were not the worst situation in their lives – the weight of a system that was against them. This experience instilled a deep sense of empathy into me.

Growing up, it was common for me to feel overlooked and underestimated. I was compelled by my State affiliation to champion the underdog and fight for them. After this experience, I decided to work as a criminal lawyer.

You become an underdog the moment your resources are pitted against those of the government. I am both humbled and energized by the responsibility that is placed upon me as clients put their trust in me to guide them through these challenging circumstances. I can’t imagine myself doing anything else.

AALM Tell us about your mentor Ed Genson and the best lessons that he taught you.

VG Eddie was a truly extraordinary person. When I was given the opportunity to work with him, his fame had almost become mythical.

He had successfully defended the most powerful and notorious Chicagoans over the past five decades. He was regarded as the best by judges, prosecutors and other defense lawyers. Eddie had an uncanny talent for analyzing a set of facts to uncover information that no other lawyer would have been able to discern. He was able to exploit these hidden nuances in his client’s favor.

I am incredibly lucky to have worked with Eddie up until his retirement. During our time working together, I learned invaluable lessons about case preparation, client service, and how to interact with juries and judges. Eddie was perhaps the most important person who taught me how to think both analytically as well as outside of the box. I learned how to treat each case with a meticulous attention to details while also embracing innovative and creative strategies.

I am grateful and awed by the time that I spent with him. This experience shaped my professional abilities, but also how I view what it takes to be a great attorney.

AALM What prompted you to start your own practice. How did you differentiate your business?

VG The decision to launch my own practice came from a deep-seated conviction. I received offers from several firms after Eddie’s retirement to become an associate. This would have been a safer option. But I wanted the autonomy to choose the clients and cases I would work on, as well the freedom to determine my own career path. It was the best decision that I could have ever made.

My own practice has allowed me to build a solid reputation early in my career. I’ve also had the opportunity to work with some of Chicago’s best legal minds. Each collaboration provided me with invaluable insights and fuelled a never-ending quest for improvement.

My clients know that I will always provide honest and transparent advice, even if this isn’t what they want. Each decision I make in their case is made jointly with the client. My primary goal is to help my clients achieve the best outcome possible, tailored to their specific situation. I am adamant that each case and client are unique and a “one-size-fits all” approach is ineffective. I adapt my style to suit the needs of each client.

My practice is built around a foundation that prioritizes open communication, honesty, and the relentless pursuit of optimal outcomes. This unique approach allows me to stand out in the legal field and provide service that is above expectations.

AALMTell me about a legal case that changed your perspective.

VG I’ve encountered many cases in my career that have changed my view of the practice. These cases revealed a disturbing reality: the government selects those they want to indict, and then searches for charges or enhancements of sentencing.

This realization reinforced my belief that the criminal justice system inherently is adversarial and prioritizes the pursuit of winning over the true pursuit of truth. This realization made me realize how important it is for individuals to have a zealous and dedicated advocate on their side. Each client deserves an advocate who will do everything possible to protect their rights within the legal limits.
