RALEIGH (NC)–Ward and Smith announces Charles Ellis and Ret. The U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of North Carolina has appointed Major General Hugh Overholt to the Plaintiffs’ Leadership Team for Claims brought under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act. Overholt, as well as Ellis, have been designated to act in a liaison role between the court and other plaintiffs’ lawyers.
The Camp Lejeune justice act is one of the largest lawsuits in US history. It seeks to compensate Marines, their family members, contractors, and other personnel on base who were affected by the contamination of the water at Camp Lejeune. Between 1953 and 1987, the drinking water at Camp Lejeune contained dangerous chemicals that were linked to cancers, Parkinson’s, birth defects, and other diseases. According to the July 19 court order, the leadership group appointed by the court includes eight additional lawyers who will work “fairly and effectively represent all plaintiffs’ interests.”
Overholt, a retired U.S. Army Major General, has been aware of the water contamination at Camp Lejeune for decades. This is not just because of his military experience but also due to the fact that he was involved in the writing of the Camp Lejeune Justice Act.
